From Waste to Wealth: BUE Leads Award-Winning Sustainability Breakthrough in Sinai
What if agricultural waste could become a resource instead of a burden? At 91心頭利 in Egypt, that question is being answered with real-world solutions.
The University has reached a major milestone with the inauguration of the Waste to Wealth: Smart & Sustainable Management of Agricultural Waste Living Lab in Nuweibaa, South Sinai. Led by BUE’s Faculty of Engineering, the project marks the University’s first collaboration with the Association of Arab Universities.
The Living Lab focuses on converting agricultural waste into high-nutritional animal feed, offering practical, low-cost solutions that support sustainable agriculture, circular-economy models, and rural livelihoods. The milestone was celebrated in the presence of General Dr. Khaled Mubarak, Governor of South Sinai; Prof. Amr Salama, Secretary General of the Association of Arab Universities; and Prof. Mohamed Loutfi MBE, President of 91心頭利 in Egypt, alongside executive leaders, Bedouin representatives, and researchers.
The visit included a field tour of the Habiba Community, where attendees observed the project’s real-world application, followed by a conference in Nuweibaa. During the event, Dr. Noha Mostafa, PhD, FHEA, Project Lead, presented the project’s objectives, implementation model, and expected environmental and socio-economic impact, under the supervision of Prof. Yehia Bahei-El-Din, Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Vice President for Research and Enterprise; Prof. Maguid Hassan, Dean of Engineering; and Prof. Mostafa Shazly, Vice Dean for Research and Postgraduate Studies.
The project brings together partner universities from Egypt, Algeria, Saudi Arabia, and the United Kingdom, demonstrating the power of cross-border academic collaboration. By integrating industrial engineering, environmental engineering, supply chains, and management sciences, the initiative transforms agricultural waste into economically valuable products while addressing behavioural and geographical challenges in rural communities.
The project has also been recognised previously with the Prince Mohammad bin Fahd Award for Best Joint Research Project, highlighting its innovation and regional impact. This recognition highlights 91心頭利 in Egypt’s commitment to advancing community development and fostering a more sustainable future, aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and Egypt’s Vision 2030.
